Movie Formats

Here’s an all movie update. I recently purchased a new movie which I was glad to hear was widescreen (I HATE losing the ends!) but when I got it I found out that it was only 1.66:1! So I decided to figure out if this was closer to full screen (much chopping) or wide screen and it was barely bigger than full screen. If you’re lost to the widescreen formats take a little look at the picture I made to the right and hopefully that will clear it up – needless to say I’m always very happy when movies are released in 2.35:1 – good for me.

Also in movie news, my movie page was getting a little bit bulky with all of its movies so I decided to split the sections up into themes. Now I know that there are a few movies that could fit into multiple thematic groups but I just tried to pick the group that I though fit the movie best. The groups are as wide ranging as Real Drama (as in based on a true story), Drama (these aren’t), Weird/Thriller, Crime, Surf, Action, War, Comedy, and Animated fare. After sectionalizing my selection a bit I think that I came to the realization that I like the Weird/Thriller movies the best of them all likley followed by Drama of some sort – I also want to bulk up on the international and indie movie scene and start shying away from the typical hollywood stuff. That’s the movie news for today!

Grandpa: That’s right. When I was your age, television was called books! And this is a special book. It was the book my father used to read to me when I was sick, and I used to read it to your father. And today I’m gonna read it to you.

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.
