Movies I've watched recently:

  • Real Steel (2011) 7/10

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

Free Audiobooks!

30 06 2005

I found a link to some classic audiobooks as well as some Christian ones that are free for the download! I’ve grabbed a couple of them already and they seem to work quite well, so help yourself! The reader seems to sound like a woman computer but I guess it works…

Lyf has also got 1/2 way across Canada on his bike trip from TO and is now in Saskatoon – you can read his journal to catch up with his travels.

My heroes – TigerDirect.ca!

I’ve been searching for a very long time for a VGA cord that is over 6 ft (25 ft actually) to go from my computer to my projector downstairs and with Jeremy’s help I was finally able to find one yesterday – high resolution graphics here we come (oh, and don’t forget this little connector)!!

A nice shot of a powerful storm that hit Saskatoon’s giant downtown – just in time for War of the Worlds!

‘Passion’ Marketing Firm to Get Word Out on ‘Narnia’

28 06 2005

Motive Marketing, which handled much of the “grass roots” marketing of Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, has acknowledged on its website that it has been hired by Disney to design and manage “an extensive Faith and Family Outreach marketing and publicity campaign” for the studio’s upcoming The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The film has been described in some publications as “The Passion for kids.” In an interview appearing in the London Telegraph last week, Jim Burns, president of HomeWord, a Christian broadcasting network, described the movie as “wonderful from the Christian point of view.” He added, “The Christian community will provide opportunities for people to take their kids to this movie through block-booking and church outings and we will be making sure that Christians go in droves.”

This drives me bonkers because if the movie is really good then won’t everyone want to see it? By specifically marketting it to the Christian crowd, no one else will ever take it seriously besides Christians, in fact, they’ll be repelled by it! Do what LOTR did and just make solid movies that respect the viewer and let them decide what to make of it. ARGH!

That all being said, I’m still pretty excited to see this movie…

So much crazy big news

28 06 2005

This week I’ve learned a lot of things are going to be changing with my family. I found out my older brother Steve and his wife Lisa are due to have their second baby, a sibling to Elijah. Also my little sister Trish and her husband Dan are due to have their first baby right around the same time – exciting! That officially leaves Heidi and I as the last on my side with no chance of catching up – I think we like it that way for now :)

On the much sadder side, my cousin Dwayne has been diagnosed with very serious cancer and is writing about his journey with it here. He was the cousin who always had the biggest smile and the right thing to say at the right time. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his young family.

running into Kris at Disneyland??!!

I ran into my old college buddy Kris at Disneyland in CA last night – what a freaky small world. Sure he was attending the same conference I am which is across the street from Disneyland but it’s still wild.

Memorial Day camping Trip

Camping in Thousand Islands

Last week on US’s Memorial Day, we were able to take a few days off to go camping to the Thousand Islands (birth place of the dressing?), we saw some spider work, some colorful wood, a overly friendly camp dog, and we also got great weather!

Heidi’s quick day trip to NYC

Heidi's day trip to NYC

Heidi took a day plane trip with her friend to NYC (where her friend is from) and got to see a lot of NYC landmarks and Seinfeld mentions (is that Oliginal??). She even survived the plane ride in a teeny 4 seater.
