Touring the sights

Mountain climbing in MTL
Today we did the whirlwind tour with my U Gerry and A Nora who are in town for a few days on the 25th Anniversary trip across Eastern Canada. First, Heidi made delicious crepes for breakfast, we took the metro out to downtown and went for a big hike up Mont Royal (the name from which Montreal gets its name) which was a lot of fun. I also took a detour on the hike which took us down some pretty steep and rocky ledges but no one got hurt. From there we went to a tourist favorite Schwatz’, where the beef was again excellent and then off for coffee and to the HABS game!!

We decided to go to the Habs preseason game against Toronto tonight where the Habs won 3-2 in a really fun game. Lindros was booed everytime he touched the puck and I heartily joined in on that festivity. Heidi got hot chocolate and chips in the second intermission so she was perfectly happy and we had a great Canadiens game (the first one we’ve been at, actually)! I plan on attending more in the future!

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

Ticats get pounded

After getting a great win against the Argos last week, the Argos came back this week and throttled my beloved Ticats by a score of 48-0. That game was kinda painful to watch.

Memorial to Dwayne

10 09 2005

My cousin, Dwayne, who passed away about 1 month ago got featured on the front page of the Saskatoon Star Phoenix in a great article on blogging and him personally. Heidi’s mom sent us the article, so I’ve scanned it and put it up for those who want to see it, I’ve left it quite large (~1MB) so be warned (click on the pic to read it)

Dave and Mo are the new Mennokids!

2 09 2005

I’m thrilled that our friends, Dave and Mo, have signed on to be the newest members of our menno-webpage-y thing. They’re our friends from church a bit and our frisbee team mostly. They’re off to BC to work for a bit then off to Thailand for an undetermined amount of time. It’ll be really nice to be able to catch up to them with pictures and words.

Gas prices soar!

1 09 2005

Wow, Yesterday I went to fill up my little rental car and gas was $1.349!!!! I couldn’t believe it, the day before I think it was $1.049. CBC had a writeup saying how the gas had gone up due to the hurricane but somehow I don’t see this really going down. $35 for 5/8 tank on an Echo is just too much money…

New article on the increase at CBC.
