The “Megapixel Myth”

31 10 2005

Type “megapixel myth” into google and you can read some interesting guides on why the number of megapixels your camera puts out doesn’t really matter and why this site is false. Interesting stuff that I didn’t know but now I do. I guess that makes camera shopping a little bit harder since we now have to really read reviews and look at other things besides the one simple number…

Movies I've watched recently:

  • Real Steel (2011) 7/10

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

  • Moneyball (2011) 9/10

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

  • Warrior (2011) 8/10

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

  • Breaking the Press (2010) 4/10

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

I love these ball bouncing games!

19 10 2005

Jonah bouncing ball
Be prepared to waste a lot of time on this one! I played the hard a bunch of times but always clicked on something that ended my game by accident. So I went and did the easy, it was pretty fun – tomorrow I whoop the hard :)

Check it out at http://jonah.bigidea.com/html/arcade/moby_blaster/index.html

Update… I tried the hard and wasn’t even close to finishing level 44 – that is one hard level that I need a much better strategy for…

TiCats out of playoff contention

15 10 2005

With another check in the loss column last night my TiCats officially removed themselves from playoff contention. Now, I’m cheering for the Roughriders all the way!

Thanksgiving with Sue and Sacha

Thanksgiving with Sue and Sacha
Heidi and I were fortunate enough to have Thanksgiving at Sue and Sacha’s place last night. We had a great time with amazing food and lots of people (almost 20!), and a 6 team (of two people each) game of Dutch Blitz. What a great night of over-stuffing!

Hurricane vs. Typhoon

4 10 2005

Who really knows what a typhoon is? I didn’t, so I looked it up and found that it’s the same thing as a hurricane, just in a different ocean – weird!

The term used to describe tropical cyclones with maximum sustained winds exceeding 33 meters per second (63 knots, 73 mph, or 117 km/h) depends on the region:

* hurricane in the North Atlantic Ocean, North Pacific Ocean east of the dateline, and unofficially in the South Atlantic Ocean
* typhoon in the Northwest Pacific Ocean west of the dateline
* severe tropical cyclone in the Southwest Pacific Ocean west of 160°E or Southeast Indian Ocean east of 90°E
* severe cyclonic storm in the North Indian Ocean
* tropical cyclone in the Southwest Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean east of 160°E.
