Top 10 Movies of 2005

31 12 2005
As has been my tradition for the last 3 years (see 2004, 2003 and 2002) I’m making a list of my favorite 10 movies that I watched for the first time this last year; so, in no particular order…

Serenity Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Dead Man Walking Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas In the Name of the Father Batman Begins In Good Company Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow Hulk Garden State

Serenity This is what I’m talking about! This is what going to the movies should feel like. Original dialogue, plot turns, ending, and a plot that is intelligent while not being tough to follow. A great film – I hope others will come out that have this level of originality.
Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe I found this adaptation to be faithful enough for me to the original. There were some added scenes and extra characters but I thought that it kept the mood and themes of the original book quite well. The special effects were also an added treat as they didn’t feel too sepcial, they blended quite well.
Dead Man Walking A phenomonal movie that actually made me think and feel for the characters. I mostly identified with the nun who was trying to do good things but kept running into trouble as she was trying to help. By the end she had forged a few substantial relationships at a personal cost. Great movie!
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas Wow, I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I loved all the ‘as your attorney’ lines. All actors were amazing, so many performances that were just unbelievable. A lot funnier than I thought it would be – portrays a very positive and humorous view of heavy drug use.
In the Name of the Father Astounding true story of a Irish punk who is blamed for bombings in England and his eventual framing and time behind bars for the crime he didn’t commit. Amazing acting, heartfelt story really reminds me of David Milgaard (though I don’t know a lot about that story) and what is presently going on in England.
Batman Begins I don’t know what more I want from a Batman movie! I’ve been looking forward to this one for at least a year and it did not fail to deliver! Great cast, story, villians, pace, mood, effects made this the best Batman movie yet!
In Good Company Great movie and better than most in this genre. Very well written dialogue, well acted, realistic story and a very nice flow to it all. This’ll make it to top 10 of the year!
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow I loved the look and feel of this one – it felt like the old Batman cartoons with a mix of IG, IJ and some other things. Didn’t much like the characters or relationships but that didn’t seem to matter for me. Nicely done!
Hulk I was blown away by how well this super hero movie was done. The characters were rich, the story was very fluid and the super stuff was done really well – one of the best super hero movies yet!
Garden State Oh boy, if I had the policy of changing my grades after I put them this would be a 10 – probably even on my top 10 movies all time. An amazing movie that speaks to me almost directly.
