Slowly waiting for tax season

28 02 2006

So I can pounce on it!! Catch it unsuspecting!

If you like to wait a little while to do your taxes and also like to do them online, RBC has a link to QuickTax which allows you to save 25% off the normal price, I don’t think that they verify that you’re an RBC customer, so you may just be able to use the link. I’d try it, it’ worth it :)

Right now, we’re finishing up our 1 month working vacation which has taken us from LA all the way up to Abbotsford; we’re flying back home on Saturday. Tanya has been happily house-sitting for us and I think she’s going to be sad to leave after a month of getting her own way.

Photo duties for my nephew

I put my nephew to work taking three pictures of doorknobs while we were trying to waste time at the hockey rink, he came up with some neat shots.

Movies I've watched recently:

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

Volunteer at the Olympics?

23 02 2006

Heidi has been really excited to be in Vancouver in 2010 to help volunteer at the Olympics. We’ve been watching a lot of the 2006 Olympics in Turin (what’s up with Torino? state name?) and she has gotten motivated from that. We also plan on watching hockey during that Olympics to watch the best players in the world – hopefully that includes Canada next time :)

Rob to Edmonton

20 02 2006

Remember my friend, Rob, who’s off to Africa on missions? Well, he also got traded from the Als to the Eskimos so he’ll be moving to Edmonton for next year. Not so big of a loss seeing as how I don’t plan on living in Montreal next year anyways :)

Watch my TV on the Road

19 02 2006

With Slingbox! Wow, this ugly looking device looks pretty sweet – with it, you can take your Satelite or Cable, stream it over the internet and watch your channels wherever you are!

Nacho Libre and other tidbits

15 02 2006

Nacho Libre Poster

A trailer for the new movie from the Napolean Dynamite camp is out and it’s called Nacho Libre – looks pretty funny.

Our friend Rob, is off for a missions trip to Africa and he has a blog to prove it.

I’m learning so much about Linux because I need to install it for some work applications that I’m running. It’s called Fedora Core 4 and I’m intimidated already. This stuff is for people much smarter than me.

Oh, and Canada won in men’s hockey yesterday – I’ve been waiting 4 years for this kind of action!

Cannon Beach and Hay Stack

14 02 2006

Cannon Beach

Heidi and I took a ride out of Portland tonight to go and see our honeymoon stomping grounds of Cannon Beach, Seaside, and Hay Stack Rock. We spent about 10 days here on our honeymoon (~ 9 years ago!) and I didn’t really remember anything that I didn’t have cemented in my mind from photos – oh, what a fickle mind i have… It was terribly cold and we were very underprepared for it all so our tour tonight didn’t last too long at all

Golden Gate bridge

Golden Gate bridge

Here’s the shot that everyone was waiting for!

A day in San Francisco

11 02 2006

San Fran street

Heidi and I spent a quick day in SF on our way up from LA to Portland – tomorrow morning we’re off to Portland. We had an excessively busy day seeing lots of San Fran and also going out for a ride to Mavericks surf break. There was also the Chinese New Year parade downtown (which is where we are staying), no pics of that sorry. Lots of fun – check some pics.

Conan and Finnish President

9 02 2006

Conan recently has found it funny that he looks a lot like the re-elected (female) President of Finland. Actually, I think it’s kinda funny too.

Tocchet and Gretzky in gambling trouble

9 02 2006

When I heard that Rick Tocchet and others were in trouble for a gambling ring that they were alleged to have been a part of back in New Jersey my heart actually beat a little faster – probably out of defensiveness of our Royal family, the Gretzky’s. Yikes!
