Montreal Canadiens smiley

Montreal Canadiens Smiley

I’ve seen some of these billboards around MTL in the last little while and thought they were really clever for the logo AND getting a smiley face in there – smart! And they just won their 4th straight (this time against the Islanders) so I’m pretty happy. Looks like they may make the playoffs!

Movies I've watched recently:

  • Real Steel (2011) 7/10

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

  • Moneyball (2011) 9/10

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

  • Warrior (2011) 8/10

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

  • Breaking the Press (2010) 4/10

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

AD officially out of luck

28 03 2006

Well, I guess we all saw it coming but Arrested Development is now (almost) officially toast. I guess it’s a good time to go, they had some great episodes and were starting to go downhill with some of their later ones (the English stuff was forgettable – MrF)

What do the Olympic rings mean?

27 03 2006

Heidi wanted to know so she did a bit of research and found out that…

As can be read in the Olympic Charter

The Olympic symbol expresses the activity of the Olympic Movement and represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games.

What 5 continents?

The rings represent the five parts of the world that were joined together in the Olympic movement: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe.

Why the specific colors?

It is wrong to believe that each color corresponds to a certain continent. In 1913, Pierre de Coubertin (the flag’s designer) decided to use the colours of the flags of all countries that were part of the Olympic Movement, six colours in all: White for the cloth and Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Black for the rings.

Any more questions? If not, that should give you your daily amount of brain food…

Lennifer is prego!

25 03 2006

My best friend Lyf, and his new wife Jennifer have found themselves pregnant and expecting their first baby in about October. This brings the number of our friends and family having babies up to a lot (Rick and Jacquie, Paul and Susi). I guess this is the time of life when the birds and the bees start happening.

SunScreen assistance needed – apply within

20 03 2006

Another eyeball shot

I recently discovered that my sunscreen application skills are lacking in thoroughness. As evidenced by my burnt eyeball and side – the eyeball should make for interesting conversation at my meeting tomorrow. Not fun, but look on the sunny side (he he) at all the places that I did get good coverage on.

Also, we went to the second hockey game of the trip yesterday which was a much better experience. The Tampa Bay fans are much more into their hockey than Florida.

La Femme Nikita, for free??!!

16 03 2006

Hey, I just saw that AOL is offering free video online and that some of the free videos are La Femme Nikita – my old favorite TV show from the makers of 24.

Also, if you were thinking of harassing your ex-girlfriend (or ex-boyfriend you saavy girls) be warned not to take it quite this far.

Panthers hockey game

16 03 2006

Florida Panthers hockey game

Heidi and I just got back from the Florida (26-30-9) vs. Philly (36-20-10) game which was a wipeout – Flyers cleaned up 4-0; some things that I found interesting:

- I saw people walking around with beer bottles and was astounded that they were allowed to walk around with glass bottles. I had to test it out for myself, so I bought one ($6.75 US!) only to realize they’re unbreakable plastic – foiled!
- When the Flyers scored it was very loud, it took me awhile to process that they were not even the home team.
- The arena wasn’t even close to being sold out – there were probably about 1/3 of the seats empty
- There was a great fight with Brashear and Allison late in the game, Brashear easily won.
- Partly because of the 4-0 score, driving home after the game was so easy, it was almost like there was no hockey game traffic at all.

Panthers management was really trying to give some added value to the game, some things i noticed:
- A Hooters girl gave out free baseball caps to everyone who walked through the entrance.
- They gave away the programs to everyone for free
- A figure skater skated around the ice during commercial breaks to keep us entertained
- the had real cheerleaders – like at football games…
- There was real fast food chains in the building selling food; well, i guess just Papa Johns, but it’s not only hot dogs that are available!

Is your shoelace technique out of touch?

14 03 2006

Ian’s Shoelace Site has many new techniques to help you get the most out of your shoelace tying experience. Here’s a note for all you Parents/Teachers out there

Suppose a child comes to you with laces where the finishing bow has come undone, yet the starting knot is still intact. Don’t be tempted to take a short-cut! You should always undo and then re-tie their starting knot just in case theirs was tied the opposite way to yours. Otherwise, the end result could be a “Slip” knot, which will come undone again.

Kindergarten teachers and day care providers probably spend more time re-tying kids shoes than anyone else. It’s important that they, of all people, know the correct way to tie shoes. They can also help enormously by learning to spot “Slip” knots and teaching the child and/or their parents how to correct this problem.

How about your shirt folding technique – that could probably use some work too…

So many things to say…

12 03 2006

My non-random thoughts over the last little while…

My very good friend who is from India and I have known from both college and work has met the woman that he’ll be marrying likely this year. How it works these days if that Indians meet their possible spouses on the internet (on sites like Shaadi and Punjabi Matrimony – note the emphasis on marriage!), they meet each other and each others families, if all goes well, they’ll then get engaged to be married shortly thereafter. My friends wedding is going to be in Inda (New Delhi) in Nov/Dec and Heidi and I are hoping very much to be there for it…

Today at church, Heidi and I received an ice cream maker from the leadership team for hosting their meeting a few months ago. I thought the card was nice but the ice cream maker really beats it all! I owe them next time!

The F1 season has started and us along with Jeff and Marisa are right in it. Today we picked the people we are going to be having in our pool and I ended up with M. Schumacher, Fisichella, Villeneuve, Coulthard, Albers, and Ide. I think I have a pretty decent team and should have a good run at the championship again even though I’m without Alonso, the Spanish superhero of F1 past.

Seeing as how Heidi and I can not resist trips to places especially when I’m already going for work we’ve decided to go together again on Wednesday to Florida! On Wednesday we’re flying to Miami, where I’m working for a few days, we’re hoping to get down the Florida Keys to see a bit down there, on the weekend we’re going to drive up the Gulf coast thru Tampa to Tallahassee where I’m working again and then on Wednesday we’re going to fly back home from Jacksonville. Should be another very fun and hot trip – we’re even Canadianizing it by seeing not 1 but 2 hockey games – in two different rinks (Philadelphia at Florida on 15th and NY Isl at Tampa Bay on the 19th) – tickets were an affordable $20 :)

Heidi seems to be on track to take up her old post at Wild Beans Cafe while the owners of the shop takes a month off to visit Mecca. So she has the run of the shop and is very excited about getting back to it, starting in a few weeks!

Lastly, if you know my brother Steve, you should wish him a Happy Birthday (he’s 31 today) and congratulations to him and his wife, Lisa, on their second son, Reece – little brother to Elijah. My little sister Trish also had a baby girl, Desirae on Wedensday, so congrats to her too; I’m an uncle a dozen times over already!!
