Giving 150%??!!
6 06 2006I’ve had a longstanding beef with people who say that they’re going to give it 110% at whatever they’re doing. This disappoints me on a mathematical level since I’m pretty sure that’s it’s impossible to give beyond 100%, if it was possible then that would be the new 100%.
This internal conflict was brought to the surface when I read that (the now pregnant, former ABC news anchor) Elizabeth Vargas said, “I feel horrible. I have debilitating nausea every day and fatigue. … I didn’t think it was fair to give this job less than 150 percent.” What the heck! Are you serious! We’re really going to raise the bar and have 150% be the new 110% which WAS the new 100% – I don’t think I can take it.
Feel free to disagree with me but you may have some troubles commenting
This all reminds me of a great quote from Spinal Tap:
Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and…
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it’s louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it’s one louder, isn’t it? It’s not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You’re on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you’re on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don’t know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don’t you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pause] These go to eleven.
