Hamilton officially out

30 09 2006

Well, they had a pretty bad game against BC and managed to lose pretty badly to bring their record to 4-12 thereby mathematically eliminitating themselves from the playoffs. Time to retool for next year baby! Now all the posts you see will be about Saskatchewan! I’m jumping that wagon – Go Riders!

Movies I've watched recently:

  • Real Steel (2011) 7/10

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

  • Warrior (2011) 8/10

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

  • Breaking the Press (2010) 4/10

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

Laval overpass collapses!

30 09 2006

Laval Overpass

I just heard that an overpass in the Montreal suburb of Laval has just collapsed. You can map around the area yourself with Google Maps here. Don’t worry, it’s far from where we live; that and we don’t drive…

Heidi’s latest art masterpiece!

29 09 2006

Calalily's

The 3D calalilies are Heidi’s latest piece that we have hanging in our place. The shelf they’re sitting on was made by my brother, so I guess it’s ok to be there in the art section.

I’ve also made a little art gallery with some other things that she’s done.

Yellow Submarine Apple Pizza

23 09 2006

Apple Pizza

When I was pretty young there was a pizza place that my parents liked in Saskatoon called the Yellow Submarine which I’m sure doesn’t exist anymore but their deal was that they sold pizzas that were fresh made but not yet cooked, so you got to take them home to cook and you’d have super fresh pizza. This seemed to make my parents happy because we’d always get pizza from there.

One of the special pizzas that they had which I remember was the Apple dessert pizza, it is a regular crust with apple filling (like apple pie filling) on the crust then mozza cheese – I loved this pizza! I remember when I started going to Pizza Hut that I was so disappointed with their dessert pizza because they had icing on top and stuff like that – I wanted cheese.

This whole pizza experience had really slipped my mind until recently, so I asked Heidi to make me this pizza and she lovingly obliged – it was so delicious and she liked it too – I think we may have it again! Yahoo!!

Hamilton wins two straight!

23 09 2006

My beloved TiCats have won two straight to bring their measly record to 4-11! The last two games that I was watching were both against the Eskimos (who are also likely going to miss the playoffs) and were very close – my heart was pounding at the end of the game yesterday at the thought they may win two games in a row – stellar!!

Vonage Rundown

21 09 2006

After using Vonage for a few months now, I’ll give my excited reader loyalists the rundown on what I think of it…

At first, when I got it and started using it, I really liked it but after a little while I started to be concerned about the voice quality. It seemed that if I was on the internet at all then my voice quality could drop drastically. It took me a few months and about $60 (for a new router) but I found a solution that worked pretty well for me. Things were going good for awhile then lately I’ve been getting a bunch of dropped calls. It’s so annoying to be talking to someone and having the call drop, calling them back and saying, sorry, my phone sucks, then, oops, it drops again; I guess I’ll use my cell…

So after about a dozen drops in the span of a week and 2 calls to tech support I decided to switch back to a regular hard line. Interesting thing is that when I got to the last Vonage person who was going to cancel my line she offered me 2 free months and access to higher tiered tech support people to help me sort out my problems but, sadly, at this point it was too late for me.

Here it is, the super pro/con list (yes, I know what that is)

Things I’ll missThings I’m looking forward to!
- voicemails in your email inbox (i loved those!)
- voicemail to get messages when I’m talking instead of the busy (I guess I could have that)
- taking my phone anywhere with me (ok, so I only used this once and that was for novelty)
- INFINITE free long distance minutes (that’s a lot!)
- bucking the Bell system
- no more forced power cycle when my phone quality is choppy
- won’t have to regulate my bandwidth
- no rushing to stop my torrents when a phone call comes in
- putting my home alarm system back on so I can hear the front door beeping
- a super happy wife

Now, off to sell my Vonage router!

Don’t trash broken stuff

18 09 2006

I was reading an article on one of my new favorite websites, LifeHacker, about how we should return things that break to the companies that make them and hope we get lucky and get something back – much better than throwing it away. In the comment section there was one guy who wrote this and it made me laugh for a few seconds – a Monday morning rarity.

I recently sent a letter to George Bush on how the war is taking too long and that I am disatisfied with his actions as a president. 2 weeks later I get in the mail a case of mountain dew, an xbox 360, and a copy of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Enclosed was a letter saying “Freedom of speech is a 2 way street. I respect your opinion. Instead of concentrating on the war overseas, join me on xbox live in conquering mexican terroists. My gamertag is LandingStripBush”.
Cool Guy.

Montreal Dawson College

14 09 2006

As probably all of you know, there was a shooting on one of the college campuses in Downtown Montreal yesterday and at least one student has died from it. The school itself is not a far walk from our house and is one of the main schools that people in our church come from (Dawson is 1 block away from Impact).

I was a bit surprised at the scope of this story, in that it was on the front page of the BBC World site and the CNN site (and probably others too). Stories don’t feel quite so global when you live in the city, I feel. I believe that everyone we know that goes to Dawson is fine but please continue to pray for those who are critically injured, those who have passed and the shooters family.

New CommunAuto Lot near our house!!

12 09 2006

My favorite car sharing community, CommunAuto, has set up a new car lot just a few blocks from our place making it so much easier to walk to our rented car!! So great!
