Google Maps has created a traffic overlay which allows you to see how the traffic is in your area (click the button next to Hybrid and Satellite). It only works some big States cities by what I’ve seen but since I’m here in Anaheim and want to go for a ride to Newport Beach I’m checking out the traffic and trusting it completely – I love it!
This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.
When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.
Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.
I thought this was a pretty amazing story, especially when I found out that one of the athletes was Canadian – I had to post it!
Three ultra-endurance athletes have just done something most would consider insane: They ran the equivalent of two marathons a day for 111 days to become the first modern runners to cross the Sahara Desert’s grueling 4,000 miles.
The three athletes were American Charlie Engle, 44, Canadian Ray Zahab, 38, and Kevin Lin, 30, of Taiwan.
At several points in their trek, the athletes stopped near sparsely populated wells to talk with villagers and nomads about the difficulties they face finding water. That marked another goal of the run — raising awareness for the clean water nonprofit group H2O Africa.
“We have seen firsthand the need for clean water, which we take for granted in North America. It’s such a foundation for any community,” Zahab said during day 108′s lunch break. The three plan to fund-raise for the group after they return home and finish recuperating.
For an idea of how far that is, check out this map.
Jerome sent me a link to the Mars Hill website which has some good Lent materials and also a list of good things to read each day if you were so inclined. I am, so I made it into a more printable version available for .
Today is ‘Mardi Gras‘, the very happy and quite indulgent day before Ash Wednesday which is the beginning of Lent. For the last 9 or 10 years, we’ve been practicing some sort of discipline for Lent every since Pastor Harry spoke about it at FGCC.
In past years, we’ve given up TV (that’s how I got off CSI), salty snacks, juice, I’ve fasted for a day a week, and a bunch of other things…
I think that this year, I’m going to have myself spent 30 to 45 minutes per day, 6 days per week reading the Bible, praying or listening to sermons and hopefully I’ll be able to do this or else on the 7th day (Sunday) I’ll be banished from computer and TV until I catch up for the week. Sounds serious enough but also attainable; also, with that penalty in place, I should be well motivated to get my time well spent during the week.
I’m sure that this is something all decent Christians do already, but I certainly need a little boost to get into it. Maybe I’ll love it and won’t change back after Easter! Anyone else doing something for Lent?
This one is going to be a bit of an opinion piece (which is rare) but bear with me…
So, as Christians, we’re supposed to try to be perfect but EVERYONE is not perfect. I think that it’s super hard for the people who are supposed to be perfect (especially religious leaders) because they have to pretend to hide their imperfections. Such was the case with the Rev. Ted Haggard who was found to be engaging in some unwholesome mano-a-mano entertainment on the side.
Turns out that he went to rehab and got himself cured and now he’s 100% heterosexual. It would seem more believable to say that he’s imperfect and is going to struggle with it for a long time, but I guess a 3 week shock therapy session makes everyone else feel happy that their leader is good to go again.
On the subject of honesty and religious organizations dealing with imperfect people, not perfect church people, I applaud Charlotte South Fellowship for putting a billboard up that said, “Sex Crazy?” The website on the billboard has a link to sexcrazycharlotte.com which is an invitation to come to their church and have a real discussion about tough things in actual peoples lives. I believe that since the Christians claims to have answers to all of lifes important questions this is a good way to start answering the ones that everyday people are actually asking. I don’t think that all church discussions should focus on this one topic but it is a decent place to start and it does grab attention, much like another favorite site of mine xxxchurch.com.
I think that this ad has been around for awhile but it’s still pretty funny. I have a lamp just like that on my desk and possibly moving it’s way to the curb, well, maybe not…
