I’m proposing that someone should spearhead the mission to metric-ize the time system and fix it like we’ve already done for measurements of length, volume, mass, etc… I haven’t been thinking about this for a long time but here’s what I propose…
Some things about time are locked down by our planet and how it moves around; the length of a day is fixed, the number of days in a year is also, other than that we’re pretty flexible. So, why not change some things around to make ‘time’ a bit more friendly.
First, I think that we should have 10 hours in a day, 100 minutes in an hour, and 100 seconds in each minute making for 100,000 seconds in each day as opposed to the 86,400 that there are today. This means that the metric second would need to have an ‘exchange rate’ and for every ‘normal’ second that passes, 1.157 metric seconds tick off.
Since we’re making such sweeping changes, why not change the way the weeks work and also how the confusing months are. I think that a week should be 5 days long making for 73 weeks in a year – let’s say one of those weeks is a week that everyone gets off making for 72 real weeks, that’s a number that goes nicely into 12 (we’ll leave it at 12 months) leaving 6 of these 5 day chunks per month (now every month has 30 days – easy to remember!) Since we’re making this whole system up, the months will get new names like, McDonald month (not the clown, it’s for Sir John A.), Laurier month, Trudeau month, heck, even a Harper month (ha ha!)
In this 5 day work week, you’d get 1 1/2 days off which people would normally bundle together with their second week to get 3 days off in 10 days (which is a higher holiday rate than the current 2 in 7 by the way).
I think that it would be confusing at first, but in 1 generation, the kids will be scoffing at the ridiculous 24 hour clock system. I should patent this idea and courier it off to myself, maybe I’ll even get a month named after me – sounds like a sweet deal for a guy just trying to help you organize your life.
