Subaru Forester purchased!

27 04 2007

subaru_forester.jpg

After 3 1/2 years of having no vehicle at all, Heidi and I decided to throw caution (and money) to the wind and get a brand new Subaru Forester! Paper signing happens today and pending financial approval, the car itself comes next week. Where does the Batman sticker go on this thing?

Movies I've watched recently:

  • Real Steel (2011) 7/10

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

Hurra Torpedo

26 04 2007

A great video of Hurra Torpedo singing total eclipse of the heart – always good for so many laughs. Oh, this was the fruits of our weekly Bible Study group.

Update: just so you don’t think Ill of our Bible Study group, we did do some moderate conversational inter-relational study-ish work but without our fearless leader Ben and it being the last one at our place, we let internet hilarity take over the tail end of the meet.

Round 2 of playoffs

24 04 2007

So after, round 1 of the NHL playoffs, Calgary has found themselves kicked out but that’s no big surprise as they barely squeaked in and were playing the excellent Red Wings. Yesterday, the Canucks won a pretty dramatic game 7 after not being able to score on Dallas in 2 whole games – that was pretty exciting!

In round 2 action, the Senators play the NJ Devils, and the Canucks are playing the Ducks. Those should both be good series’ – hopefully these guys can make it through to the 3rd round!

Got a Costco Membership

17 04 2007

After not very much contemplation, Heidi and I have decided to get a Costco Membership. There wasn’t a specific reason for getting one, I think that we just wanted to go for a date and walk down the aisles of Costco and ohh-and-ahh at the low prices. We were actually impressed with the prices and will definitely be going back when we have our little rental car to tote the goods back home in.

So, if you want to sidle up to us and get in to Costco for a discount shopping trip, come and pick us up and buy me a hotdog or icecream sundae on the way out and it’s all good.

The Canadian Second

I’m proposing that someone should spearhead the mission to metric-ize the time system and fix it like we’ve already done for measurements of length, volume, mass, etc… I haven’t been thinking about this for a long time but here’s what I propose…

Some things about time are locked down by our planet and how it moves around; the length of a day is fixed, the number of days in a year is also, other than that we’re pretty flexible. So, why not change some things around to make ‘time’ a bit more friendly.

First, I think that we should have 10 hours in a day, 100 minutes in an hour, and 100 seconds in each minute making for 100,000 seconds in each day as opposed to the 86,400 that there are today. This means that the metric second would need to have an ‘exchange rate’ and for every ‘normal’ second that passes, 1.157 metric seconds tick off.

Since we’re making such sweeping changes, why not change the way the weeks work and also how the confusing months are. I think that a week should be 5 days long making for 73 weeks in a year – let’s say one of those weeks is a week that everyone gets off making for 72 real weeks, that’s a number that goes nicely into 12 (we’ll leave it at 12 months) leaving 6 of these 5 day chunks per month (now every month has 30 days – easy to remember!) Since we’re making this whole system up, the months will get new names like, McDonald month (not the clown, it’s for Sir John A.), Laurier month, Trudeau month, heck, even a Harper month (ha ha!)

In this 5 day work week, you’d get 1 1/2 days off which people would normally bundle together with their second week to get 3 days off in 10 days (which is a higher holiday rate than the current 2 in 7 by the way).

I think that it would be confusing at first, but in 1 generation, the kids will be scoffing at the ridiculous 24 hour clock system. I should patent this idea and courier it off to myself, maybe I’ll even get a month named after me – sounds like a sweet deal for a guy just trying to help you organize your life.

NHL Scoring Leaders

9 04 2007

nhl_scoring_leaders.jpg

OK, so my local team isn’t that great and really didn’t deserve to be in the playoffs but my country still puts the very best players out there. Take a look at the top 5 scoring leaders – all of them are from Canada – I’m so proud of them!

2007 playoffs set

8 04 2007

The 2007 playoffs were set in dramatic fashion this weekend with the last spot in the east in hot contention. First, the Canadiens were promised it with a win over the Maple Leafs which they couldn’t get. The Maple Leafs were then entitled to it if the Islanders lost to New Jersey Devils which actually did not happen – the Islanders won the game in a dramatic OT shootout win (after NJ tied it up with 1 second left in the game). The Heart and Soul of Edmonton has moved to Long Island – after the Canadian teams, the Islanders (and the Penguins) are my favorites.

These poor suckers couldn’t cut the mustard…

Christos Anesti! (Christ Is Risen!)

8 04 2007

Alithos Anesti! (Indeed, He is Risen!)

Happy Easter! Lent is over! I had decided to read for 30 to 45 mins per day and I actually succeeded at it! So that’s about 40 days that I listened to a message, read the Bible or a book about Jesus. To break it down, I probably listened to about 20 messages (from the meeting house), about 10 days of reading the Bible and 10 days of reading Philp Yancey’s, “The Jesus I Never Knew“. I think that I missed about 6 days during the week which I had to make up on the following Sunday.

I really got to enjoy the time to I was spending learning about God and hope that I can continue this into the rest of the year!

Looking to buy a car

1 04 2007

After about 3 years of not owning a car in Montreal, Heidi and I are starting to crack. We’re finding public transportation difficult for getting to church, going to friends houses, or going to Ultimate games (coming up!) so we’re seriously looking at getting a car. So far, I’m shopping on craigslist and I’ve found a few cars including a Subaru and a VW that look pretty interesting.

We’re so excited to be able to have a car at our disposal again; thinking of weekend road trips, easy drives to MEC and trips for juice to the grocery store are really thrilling for us! I’ll post some pictures once we decide to buy something.

Be wary of USB super-sticks

1 04 2007

I have a 1GB USB stick (E-stick for some) that I love. I put Firefox on it and had my browser set up beautifully to work on any computer that I go to – problem was that I didn’t password protect anything on there and on my recent trip to Florida, I lost it.

If I had password protected it, no worries at all, just $20 down the drain, but that’s it. Now, if a malicious person got it and wanted to get into some of my accounts lots of the passwords are right in there! So now, I have the enviable job of finding really important accounts (like my email, blog and bank accounts) and changing the passwords. Bummer – learn your lesson USB stick travelers!
