Hamilton starts out 0-3

15 07 2007

Well, it’s no worse than other years so I guess I’m optimistic. Here’s what cfl.ca had to say, “Hamilton (0-3) is now the CFL’s lone winless squad.” Ahh, music to my ears… This is the price I have to pay so that in 30 years when these guys win the Grey Cup, no one will be able to say I’m a bandwagon jumper…

Movies I've watched recently:

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

Chilaquiles – the new recipe champ!

7 07 2007

Chiliquilles

This has probably taken over the sweet and sour ribs as my very favorite recipe that Heidi makes. The original comes courtesy of Rick and has been tweaked a bit to perfection; the keys to success for this one is the homemade salsa and the corn tortillas. After that, you should be good…

Chilaquiles

Serves 4

  • Oil for frying
  • 6 tortillas, cut or torn into strips (for a group of 4 people I would use about 8 tortillas)
  • 2-3 BBQ’ed half chicken breasts
  • 10oz can / 275 g tomatoes – (recipe calls for Mexican green tomatoes, but I don’t think we’ve used these)
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 2-3 drained canned jalapeno chilies chopped
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander (Mexican parsley)
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • ¾ cup chicken stock (or vegetable stock if vegetarian)
  • salt and pepper
  • Garnish: chopped fresh coriander, chopped onion, stuffed green olives (optional)

Directions:

  1. Heat oil in frying pan and fry tortilla strips a few at a time, on both sides, without browning (to save time you can also put them on a large baking sheet and broil in the oven)
  2. Puree together tomatoes w/ juice, onion, chilies, and coriander.
  3. Heat tomato mixture in fry pan for 2-3 minutes, adding salt and pepper to taste. Stir frequently.
  4. Pour a layer of the sauce into casserole/baking dish, then a layer of chicken and top with layer of tortilla strips and a layer of grated cheese. Continue until all ingredients have been used, reserving some cheese for sprinkling on top.
  5. Pour chicken stock over the dish and sprinkle with cheese.
  6. Bake the chilaquiles, uncovered, in a preheated over at 350F for 30 minutes or until heated through.
  7. Serve directly from dish garnish with olives, onion, and coriander.
Enjoy!

Taco Bell in Montreal

6 07 2007

I just found out last week that we have a brand new Taco Bell in Montreal so Heidi and I made our way out there for supper today. Sure, our leftovers in the fridge were of much higher quality than our Taco Bell experience but man, what nostalgia. It’s like what those childhood Transformers fanboys must be feeling about right now, except without the regret.

How to Be a Good Wife

Read and learn dear ladies…

Here’s an article that’s been floating around the www for awhile and I found it pretty fascinating – it’s a ‘good wife’ guide from 1955 that surely bares almost no resemblance to one that would be made today. Some favorites of our house were:

  • Let him talk first – remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours
  • Don’t complain if he’s late home for dinner or even if he stays out all night. Count this as minor compared to what he might have gone through that day.
  • Speak in a low, soothing and pleasant voice.
  • You have no right to question him.

Google Pedometer Mashup

I found a nice little site that lets you click points on a google map to draw yourself a custom map of where you’ve been. I found it useful for figuring out how long ‘the loop’ is that we walk many nights (4.3k) as well as the walk to downtown (5.7k). The picture attached is the walk that we did a few weeks ago when Andrew & Katherine were over and wanted to do something Montreal-ish. That’s what we came up with – 9kms of Montreal fun (including Schwartz’s).

Dangers of Soy?

I’m going to try not to put too much opinion in this one because I’m going to end up eating my words, but it behooves me to inform my soy fanatic friends that all may not be well at the vegetable factory.

7-Eleven = Kwik E Mart

Only in the States could something so excellent happen…

To promote the opening of the new Simpsons movie, there are a few 7-Elevens that have remodeled themselves as Kwik-E-Marts – Squishees, Krusty O’s and all. Very cool
