Hot Day in August

Hot Montreal Day

Maybe my sympathy is coming around and I’m beginning to be able to understand what those Saskatoon’ers were whining about before. The heat has come East! Today we’re 40C with humidity – not quite the hottest I’ve seen but I still do have a healthy glow.

Movies I've watched recently:

  • Real Steel (2011) 7/10

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

10 Year Anniversary… of getting our car broken into

2 08 2007

Last weekend Heidi and I threw a Hawai’ian Luau to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary and we had a lot of fun doing it (facebook pictures).

We didn’t realize that a few days later we were going to get to celebrate another 10 year anniversary – the one of our car being broken into.

Showing off the fancy duct tape / plastic window

10 years ago on about July 31 (1997) we had all of our camping stuff in our car for night (except the stuff we were sleeping with) so we could get up really early in the morning and head to our next destination. The car parking lot was about 1 km from the camping area. At about 3 in the morning the warden wakes us up to let us know that our car has been broken into; we surveyed the scene and noticed that a bunch of our stuff had been taken – most famously our recorded cassettes, leaving us with only the tape in our deck of Radiohead’s OK Computer on one side and The Bends on the other. We still associate those albums with our honeymoon.

The modern re-telling of the classic tragedy

Fast Forward (we’re still using cassette talk, right?) 10 years to July 31, 2007 and we wake up to see that our drivers side window is again smashed in and the GPS taken from its place on the dash. This time I didn’t have to drive about 3 states and 3 provinces with a broken window which was nice but there was a lot of vacuuming to do. I also got to relearn my lesson of not leaving things in your car of value that are easily visible from outside. I can hardly wait till I forget and get to relearn this lesson in 10 more years!
