Top 10 Movies of 2007

31 12 2007
As has been my tradition for the last 5 years (see 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002) I’m making a list of my favorite 10 movies that I watched for the first time this last year. Of course, I’m not recommending these movies for everyone, if you want personal recommendations, let me know. Here’s the list, and yes, I do know that there’s 11, I’m putting 2 TV shows in as 1 movie…

Fearless Flushed Away Knocked Up The Lookout No Country for Old Men The Prestige Children of Men Borat Casino Royale Battlestar Galactica 30 Rock

Honorable Mentions to The Hoax, Sicko, Cars, In Cold Blood, The Queen, and Eastern Promises which are also great films. (more…)

Movies I've watched recently:

  • Real Steel (2011) 7/10

    YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

    This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

  • Moneyball (2011) 9/10

    When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

  • Warrior (2011) 8/10

    MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

  • Breaking the Press (2010) 4/10

    Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

Remember awhile ago when I made the plunge and inked myself up? Well, Heidi decided to match me and even up it one notch – nice work inky girl. BTW – If you’re curious, the font came from dafont.

What I’m Watching

What I'm Watching

Over the life of this blog, the thing that I have usually put the most effort into but the fewest people have seen is the list of movies I’ve watched and what I thought of them. I’ve been doing this for all movies that I’ve watched for the last 5+ years so it’s getting pretty long; additionally there are my top 10 picks from every year going back to 2002 (All Time, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002). I’ve decided to make a permanent picture link to the movies I’ve watched in the sidebar (–>); so feel free to check back anytime to see if it’s updated.

For an idea of what my number ratings mean in words, here’s an idea:

  • 10 – Phenomenal Movie! Couldn’t be recommended high enough! (there are about 3 of these in my whole list)
  • 9 – Very good movie – I liked it a lot and there’s a good chance that you will too
  • 8 – Quite good movie – I was generally pleased with the movie
  • 7 – Barely a recommendation – The lowest threshold of still being recommended; a decent movie
  • 6 – Not really recommended – I wouldn’t suggest you seek out this film
  • 5 or less – Varying degrees of bad – all not recommendable

Prince Caspian Trailer

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was one of my favorite movies of 2005, so it’s probably pretty obvious that the sequel, Prince Caspian is a movie that I’m really looking forward to. I noticed the trailer for it today, and it looks pretty incredible, check it out!

Homemade EggNog

6 12 2007

eggnog.jpg

I have a real fondness for EggNog and I’ve gotta say that it’s almost my very favorite thing about Christmas (ok, there’s probably other more favorite things, but eggnog is pretty awesome). This year, I decided to take the plunge and make some myself instead of being at the mercy of the overpriced grocery store stuff; it was pretty great.

Here’s the recipe that I used from allrecipes with my modifications to cook the egg yolks…

Egg Nog

* 4 egg yolks
* 1 (5 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
* 1 tablespoon white sugar
* 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
* 4 1/2 cups milk
* 4 egg whites
* 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
* 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:

Wisk the yolks and the condensed milk over a very low heat stirring constantly till it reaches 140-160 degrees; remove from heat and stir occasionally till cooled. Gradually stir in sugar, vanilla and milk. Beat the egg whites until stiff, then add them to the milk mixture. Garnish with nutmeg & cinnamon.

TiCats get a new and more awesome GM

5 12 2007

After firing their previous GM, the TiCats decided that they needed someone with a bit more experience this time around so today they turned to Bob Hoskins look-alike, Bob O’Billovich to turn the course of their wayward ship. I’m excited to see what effect high quality management will have on my under performing team – I hope for big things…

Au Revoir Facebook!

2 12 2007

Thanks to inhibitions of my own, prodding (prophesying) from Chris, Wade and the CBC; I’ve decided to ditch Facebook. I’ve wasted a stupid amount of time there but I have got in touch with some people I would have otherwise never talked to again in my life so that was nice. I’ll talk to you all again when the next genius social networking tool comes around!
