Megaman crafty obsession

30 04 2010

from imgur.com

Lately, I’ve been finding all these old Megaman crafts and games very interesting. I’ve found the post it note window picture like the one above, the cross stitch megaman from a few posts ago, a new favicon.ico, a boss beating shirt, a golden book, chain mail, a lot of quilts, an afghan, a card holder, a mosaic, a tattoo, stained glass, sprite charts, guitar versions of the music, the game itself online, or megaman playing super mario brothers.

Phew – lastly, for those that like other games too, there’s sheet music for Super Mario Brothers.

Movies I've watched recently:

  • Real Steel (2011) 7/10

YVR > SJC - kind of a zany concept but it works relatively well, not a great boxing movie but not too bad.

  • The Guard (2011) 8/10

This movie came well recommended to me and it was a good, strange and profanity laced comedy. The main character was profound, confusing and yet remarkably consistent and believable. Some good lines in there and a nice change of pace from an action movie loaded with action to this one which seems to try to avoid it at every turn.

When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.

MSP > YVR - Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.

Ugh, this Christian movie was not worth watching. While it followed the plot of the Prodigal Son story closely, it seemed to lack all the great details that we had been learning about in the Prodigal God book study that we were going through. The acting was poor, most of the characters were poorly developed and the dialog was very local (to Texas) and didn't sound very natural to my Canadian ears.

Canadiens advance to round 2

29 04 2010

On the back of some amazing goaltending by Halak, the Canadiens have beaten the top team in the league (Capitals) after being down 3-1 in the series. I was able to watch the game 7 yesterday and it was a tense one; it felt like the Habs were resting on their early goal for far too long but the amazing goaltending held them and they were able to get the massive win.

The Habs haven’t been to the second round since ’07 when they lost to the Flyers and they haven’t made it past the second round since ’92 when they won the Cup against the Kings. They’re off to face the Penguins who they’ve only faced one other time (in ’97) and beat them in the first round 4-2.

In other great news, my other new favorite team, the Canucks, have also made it to 2nd round by beating the Kings 4-2 in the series. They’re off to re-face the Blackhawks who they lost to last year 2-4. Congrats to Henrick Sedin for winning the league scoring title (Art Ross trophy) with 112 points – first time for a Canuck.

Lastly, congrats to my local Abbotsford Heat (Calgary Flames’ farm team) on beating the Rochester Americans (Florida Panthers farm team) after being down 3-1 in that series. Good luck in the next round against the Hamilton Bulldogs (Montreal Canadiens farm team); I’m not quite sure who I’m cheering for there.

Doesn’t Taylor Lautner (aka Jacob from New Moon) look a lot like Sidney Crosby? Both Heidi and I thought that exact thing independently while watching the terrible New Moon.

Doesn’t Wendell Pierce (aka “Bunk” from The Wire) look a lot like Quinton Aaron (aka “Big Mike” from The Blind Side)?

MegaMan Cross Stitch

7 04 2010

picture from onechordwonder on flickr

I’ve been thinking of ways to merge my geeky side and slightly effeminate crafty side into a cool project and this cross stitch project is starting to look like the perfect fit. As you may remember, I did all my Excel preparation beforehand.

The person who did these MegaMan cross stitched beauties even gives a tutorial outlining the colors that you’ll need to get (black (310), white (5200), a fleshy color (945 or 744), light blue (3846) and dark blue (3843)) as well as the software to make new patterns and get the color recommends (PCStitch).

This should be a more adequately sized project as opposed to my slightly impossible goal of making a crocheted MegaMan blanket.

The Zodiac Letters

6 04 2010

from zodiackiller.com

I’m not really recommending the Zodiac as a great movie to watch, it’s a bit long but it left me with an interest in the codes that the killer wrote in to the newspapers about what he was up to. Interestingly, there is still 1 of the cyphers that remains unsolved.

There’s a pretty complete list of his letters to the newspaper along with the cyphers that have been solved, but one is still unbroken to this day. What makes it pretty challenging is that he misspells some words, there are no spaces, and he uses more than one symbol per letter. I’m sure Batman could crunch this out in a few minutes using his super batcave computer, but sadly, he’s fictitious. I’d take a stab at it but much smarter people than me have already tried and failed, so… we wait.

The Story of Bottled Water

About 2 years ago I did a post of the Story of Stuff which is a good video of where stuff comes from and where it ultimately goes to and what drives the cycle.

The people that made that have now made a new video called, “The Story of Bottled Water.” It’s equally interesting and challenging as it outlines the benefits of bottled water (none), the reason it exists (make money) and what you can do to stop the waste (bring an empty).

Reveling in Shallowness

Ohh, this one is me.

“Look at that one! What kind of fish is that, dad?”

“I haven’t the faintest! I’ve spend my whole life entirely consumed with pop culture… Anything relevant I might have learned about the natural world has long been displaced with a list of bands, movies, and video games I have mindlessly consumed.”

“Look! He’s all puffy! I’m going to call him Blubby.”

“You know what would be cooler? Why don’t you call him… Halo 3?”
