Top 10 Movies/TV of 2012

31 12 2012
As has been my tradition for the last 10 years (see 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003 and 2002) I’m making a list of my favorite 10 movies/tv that I watched for the first time this year. I’m not recommending these shows for everyone, here’s the list:

Honorable Mentions to Higher Ground, and If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front which are also great films.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes This was a really good prequel!! The acting was great, the animation was quite good (not flawless but not distracting), the story was well told and the characters were awesome with moments of Godfather II in there with Caeser as the original Don. Really loved it!
Moneyball When a movie with a plot as benign as MLB drafting and trading using statistics instead of scouting intuition is this entertaining, you know they did something right. Great story that had both Heidi and I riveted to a sport that we really know and care very little about.
The Avengers watched this in Denver with my friend on opening night and it was awesome!
The Dark Knight Rises This one felt messier than the first two in that they were trying hard to tie a bunch of stuff up in the final act but all together it was still very good.
Brave I enjoyed this a lot! I was happy that the trailers didn’t spoil too much of the movie. The characters were lively and entertaining, the story was very interesting and kept you involved to see how the characters would change compared to how they were when you first met them.
“Sherlock” An absolutely awesome TV show that would be suitable for nearly everyone. Very cleverly written, and well acted throughout. I love the shortened seasons (3 longer episodes) that the British use as they’ve really packed a movie-like punch into every episode. Well recommended.
“Breaking Bad” I originally followed this show through season 1 but found it too draining to watch. I took it up again this year after a many-year hiatus and tore right through it. The main characters are like nothing you’ve seen before in tv, you get to watch them change over the course of the show from protagonists doing bad things for good reasons into genuinely bad people making very bad choices.
Blue Like Jazz This one was notable for impressing me beyond what I expected. I read and loved the book and saw the trailer for this which I thought looked terrible. The movie itself though was great and would be an easy recommend for nearly any Christian who liked the book or is interested in an honest depiction of faith among young adults.
The Raid: Redemption Absolutely grsily action, from start to end – that’s all that you need to know.
Warrior Solid acting in this action-drama, decent story, pretty good fight scenes and sympathetic characters. All in all, nicely done.
