Bill Mayer on Christians loving their enemies

20 05 2011

I’m not really a Bill Mayer fan but in this clip he calls out Christians to live up to the high standard of Christ.

New Rule! If you’re a Christian who supports killing your enemies and torture, you have to come up with a new name for yourself.

If you ignore every single thing that Jesus commanded you to do… you are not Christ’s followers, you’re just fans.”

SLC > MSP - I can like Soderbergh, I want to like Carano and the supporting cast is pretty awesome but this movie felt like a big miss. The acting was not great (that was expected), the story was incomprehensible and could only be traced by action scene to action scene and the characters were very under-developed. The stunts were (probably) all done by Carano which for the fighting scenes was pretty cool but lots of the other stuff felt like it could have been better. All told, I'd love to see her in more movies (or a tv show) even though this one was not that great.

Good performances, interesting characters, good location, and a simple story well told. All that said, I liked it, but I didn't love it. Best quote was, "Give you kids enough money to do something but not enough to do nothing."

  • Like Water (2011) 7/10

An honest look at the most successful but certainly not the most loved athlete in UFC history, Anderson Silva.

  • Air Guitar Nation (2006) 7/10

    * * * * * * *

Documentary about the rise of Air Guitar in the States and it's popularity worldwide. The first few minutes it seems to be really bizarre to be taken so seriously but by the end it begins to seem much more normal.

Levee, hanging out, saving stuff

Amid all the flooding along the Mississippi River, it’s a beautiful thing to see a levee that’s working just like it should.

Know Jesus… Know Aloha!

16 04 2011

When we were in Hawai’i 6 years ago, we saw this sticker on the announcement board of a church that we walked past. Heidi loves the Hawai’ian culture and we have really latched onto the word and concept of Aloha (meaning affection, love, peace, compassion and mercy), even giving it to our daughter for a middle name.

I was scouring the net for these same stickers to get for Heidi but came up with nothing. I eventually decided to get buttons made (from Jesse at Custom Band Buttons, who was great) for her birthday but since the smallest order is a 50 pack, she also gets to share her ‘Aloha’ spirit with a bunch of other people.

Noisy House

15 04 2011

Noise in the house from Matthew H on Vimeo.

A couple times in the last couple weeks, we’ve had a strange noise in our house that we couldn’t quite figure out (video above) – was it the furnace, the electrical, water, animals?? So confusing?

Well, we found out what it was, check here for the answer:

What a pecker! I’m not sure what kind of bird that is exactly, but here’s his song if you want to help me identify him.

Greetings from Rat-ster

1 04 2011

We found an April Fools Rat on our car windshield this morning. I was eating breakfast thinking that was an awfully rat looking branch that landed on our car and later confirmed its rat-ness when taking the garbage to the curb. I left it on the car so Heidi and the kids could see it as well and a little while later Heidi comes and gets me to take a look at ‘something’ and Saff is raving about how there’s a rat with “red eyes!” on our car.

Thanks Luke B, I imagine this was your work.

8-bit Pink Floyd

29 03 2011

I really like the sound of 8-bit Nintendo-style music and someone has taken the time to put Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon into the format. Check out the music on youtube

Simplicity is the key

24 03 2011

pic from readymade

I found this graphic from artist Nick Dewar which he made for Ready Made magazine. I thought it was pretty perfect for Heidi so I printed a little one for her birthday and wanted to pass it on to any other biking/eco buddies that we have.

Keep it simple!

The Foundation in Vancouver

20 03 2011

img from michellemeals

Heidi and I got to spend a day with each other in Vancouver for her birthday on the weekend, watching the excellent Ultimate Wave in Tahiti starring Kelly Slater in astounding OmnIMAX at Science World (the biggest screen ever – it fills up your entire field of vision).

We followed it up with a massive plate of nachos at The Foundation on Main and 7th and chased that down with some cauliflower curry on rice which together filled our collective very hungry tummies.

Thanks to Mom and Dad for making the kid-less date happen, it was so much fun!

Free Monthly Christian Audiobook

17 03 2011

Christian Audiobooks evidently allows a free download of one of their audiobooks every months and this month is RC Sproul’s book called, “The Holiness of God“. I was able to download it by giving only a name and email address (which could both be bogus) – anyways, if you’re at all interested in the material and the format, I’d suggest you check it out – the price is right!

Thanks Eric for the link!

Merge United and Continental points

14 03 2011

United Airlines and Continental Airlines have merged awhile ago and now you can manually merge your points and status’ to one airline. This will likely be done automatically at the end of the year, but if you want to get everything combined a bit earlier, just head to United’s special page and get your points and status transferred across right away. I tried it and it worked great for me.
